Prior knowledge about propagation phenomena in electrical systems

An important feature of this learning material is the consistent use of a simulation program - called "TL-transmission line". This program allows to visualize transition processes on a double line.
The program TL is based on the one-dimensional solution of Maxwell's equations.
The developed algorithm has proven to be reliable and stable under all adjustable boundary and initial conditions.
A documentation about this simulation program can be found at
http://www.astrophysik.uni-kiel.de/~hhaertel.
Prerequisite for processing this material is some basic knowledge about electric circuits, as it is offered in the tutorial The so-called simple electric surface
In this tutorial the focus is set on the existence of surface charges on current carrying conductors, thus supporting a qualitative understanding of the concept of voltage.
A special focus of this tutorial is set on the treatment of transitional processes that always occur when any condition within a circuit is changed.
Here too, the knowledge about surface charges is helpful for a deeper understanding.
Modern computer open up an unprecedented access to the visualization of such transition processes and so facilitate access to a deeper and qualitative understanding of electrical phenomena.
